Doing It All

Are you an Executive Director, a Treasurer, or an Operations Manager that is wearing many hats while fulfilling your role at your nonprofit? Bookkeeping is a time-consuming task that takes you away from focusing on furthering your mission. Or maybe you’re overwhelmed with wondering if your financial tracking is being done correctly – given that nonprofits have complicated reporting requirements – and just need someone’s support who has experience with nonprofit bookkeeping. My goal is to play a small part in the big impact your nonprofit is making by doing the bookkeeping so that you have time to do more good.

Restricted Funds and Functional Expenses

If you don’t track them correctly in your accounting software then you’re not getting an accurate financial picture and you’re not able to report on how money was spent.  I can help you set up QuickBooks Online in a way that works for tracking restricted funds wholistically and individually by grant/fund, as well as categorizing transactions by function.

Systems and Processes

Audit. It can be a scary word if you don’t have good systems in place for managing the supporting documentation that you would need to provide for all of your financial transactions. I can help you with receipt management and digital documentation storage. And if you’d like some support refining your approvals processes and spending oversight I can help with that too!

A Little Bit About Me

I am reliable and client-centered; I really want to partner with you to help your nonprofit flourish!

I’ve always wanted a career that involved helping others, so when I found that I actually loved bookkeeping, it made sense that I was drawn to wanting to support nonprofits. When I’m not keeping the books, I love playing board games with my family, reading good fiction, and taking dance classes. I also have an apple orchard with my husband, and my experience working with the earth and hundreds of “newborn” apple trees makes it clear to me that a root system is a powerful thing. Its health is the key to a plant’s growth. It may be cheesy, but I also see the connection between healthy, accurate books and the ability for a nonprofit to grow, so when it came time to name my business, Root System Bookkeeping was the obvious choice (and it helps that my last name ties in nicely). I’m a QuickBooks ProAdvisor and member of the Digital Bookkeeper Association.

Amanda is very thorough and clearly understands the needs of a small nonprofit like ours. She is such a helpful thought partner and I feel assured that our finances are well accounted for under her care.

End of Life Washington

Amanda was the perfect choice for someone starting their first nonprofit, or any, business. Not only is she professional and on top of all the details, she also recommended many external resources that I have put to use. I needed recommendations I could rely on. And, though our org is very small, she treats us as legit as any, and is very kind and generous with her communications. I heartily recommend Amanda Root!

I cannot say enough nice things about Amanda! I am so grateful for her services. I attempted to do the booking myself. Not a good idea. Amanda came in and cleaned up my huge mess and made it squeaky clean. It’s so simple to work with her each month and it’s a HUGE peace of mind knowing our financials are so well organized. My CPA told me I’ll be saving money on his services once he saw the financial documents Amanda provides for our business each month. In addition to Amanda being a great bookkeeper, she is kind, gentle and always willing to answer all my questions. I 100% recommend her services.

Aha Sugar Co.

We brought Amanda on to help with our bookkeeping last July. We are a small non-profit and we’re balancing restricted and unrestricted funds, events, payroll, and lots of complicated bookkeeping issues. Amanda has been a dream to work with. She is easy to get in touch with, responsive to questions, patient with me as I learn new things in Quickbooks, and she has helped us clean up our bookkeeping practices. She saves me time and ensures our board has good financial documents to help make important decisions. I highly recommend hiring Amanda for your bookkeeping needs!

Girls on the Run of Snohomish County

Amanda is outstanding. After 10 years in business, we finally hired a professional bookkeeper and she has made us up our game in terms of financial accountability and awareness. She’s on me all the time to get the stuff done that she needs, and it isn’t an easy job to chase me down for the information with the amount that I travel (pre-covid). I cannot say enough positive things about Amanda, and wholeheartedly endorse her.

Resources for Nonprofits

Nonprofits have the unique requirement of needing to report on functional expenses, or more specifically, how your spending is split between a management/general/administrative purpose, fundraising needs, and direct benefits to your program/s. One might think you could just run a Statement of Activity (also known as the […]
Benjamin Franklin once said, “Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship.”  So why not plug those leaks wherever possible?  Nonprofits are lucky in the sense that many products that are useful, if not necessary, for their functioning can be obtained for […]
